Classic Marinara Sauce

This marinara sauce may be used with various pasta dishes, Spaghetti, Ravioli, Stuffed Shells, Tortellini, and Chicken Parmesan as well an on Italian Meatball or Sausage Sandwiches.

 

Ingredients:

1 medium onion – diced fine
3-5 cloves garlic – minced
1 qt home canned tomatoes or 1 can (12 oz) diced tomatoes
1 can (12 oz) tomato sauce
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
2 tablespoons brown sugar (may substitute honey)
1 handful fresh oregano leaves – chopped
10-12 fresh basil leaves – chopped
1/2   teaspoon fresh ground pepper
Optional (sliced mushrooms)
Optional (ground beef – for meat sauce/spaghetti sauce)

Preparation:

Sauté onions over medium high heat until translucent
Add garlic and sauté another couple of minutes
Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste – stir to blend
Add brown sugar
Add basil and oregano
Add salt and pepper (to taste)
Add optional ingredients
Reduce heat to low and simmer for at least 30 minutes on very low heat, stirring often to prevent sticking
