WHAT’S NEW

in the Really Big Database of Projectile Points ?

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME BIG CHANGES MADE TO THE DATABASE OVER THE PAST YEAR

MAJOR REVISIONS

1)     A three-month overhaul of “ Clovis” has produced a much more coherent and hopefully interesting/informative section.

“ Clovis” is now divided into two files numbering 566 pages total: CLOVIS I features thumbnails of all Clovis-identified artifacts while CLOVIS II contains the source images (there are 1784 images in total).

CLOVIS II now includes numerous maps and site images in an effort to provide a much more comprehensive view of the artifacts and their origins.

2)     Lengthy typological prefaces have been added to many point categories. This is a continuing process.

3)     All images have been compressed to a screen/Web quality to reduce the overall database size and to             permit files to open far more quickly than was the case. The net effect was to make it possible to fit on one DVD what had recently required three (reduced from over 8 gigabytes to less than 4 gigabytes).

ADDITIONS

Several new file categories have been added to the database to broaden its usefulness as a resource. These cover atlatls (spear throwers), atlatl weights and weapons/hunting tools in bone and other non-stone materials; yet another, still in the beginning stage, addresses adzes, celts & chisels (mostly Northwest Coast so far). The relevant files are:

1)     Atlatls (ZZZATLATL); the “z” prefix is simply a device to force the file to the end of the file list): There are over 900 images (thumbnails & source pictures) describing authentic spear throwers from all over the world. These include the amazing 28 partial or complete whalebone atlatls from the Par-Tee Site in Oregon.

2)     Atlatl Weights (ZZZZATLATLWEIGHTS); there are over 1100 images in total that pertain to atlatl weights.

3)     Bone, Ivory, Antler & Shell (ZZZBONE): Given that what we see in the archaeological record is often only a minor fraction of ancient tool kits, this section provides a glimpse of non-lithic weapons/hunting tools. There are slightly over 400 images in this file.

There is also a rudimentary attempt underway to spread the database’s coverage into Mexico, Central America and South America. This latest extension of the database is however in its infancy. (Tip: Search by country, then culture; at this stage, “country” will produce better results.)

SUMMARY

There are now 129 files in the database containing over 37,000 images (source pictures & thumbnails) on nearly 12,000 pages.

** IMPORTANT NOTE ON ATTRIBUTIONS/CREDITS **

This database is an amalgam of images and text derived from many hundreds of different sources. Where possible, I now attempt to include a source credit – but there are oversights and these are entirely my errors of omission….

The database began over five years ago as a personal reference tool; it was not intended to serve as a public-access reference aid so initially I didn’t include source credits except where they seemed useful to me. As the database grew and others began using it, this deficiency had to be corrected. The permission/attribution process continues.

The former should be the blueprint for how all American states and Canadian provinces/territories record their prehistory. Likewise, David’s personal crusade to compile an encyclopedic visual representation of Texas points is a model others might emulate – and a testimony to the contributions that can be made to a better understanding of the past by dedicated avocational archaeologists.

As a Canadian though I have to express a certain amount of disappointment that few domestic online resources are available to anyone seeking more information on projectile points north of the 49^th parallel.

The outreach and community-involvement programs that are a commonplace in America are largely unknown in Canada. And if a willingness to inform and involve the public is notable by its absence, the same can be said of peer sharing within the archaeological community itself (and has been said by archaeologists of my acquaintance).

WHAT’S IN THIS DATABASE

The database contains over 37,000 images of authentic points on nearly 12,000 pages (8.5” x 11”) as of January, 2010. It is divided into 129 main alphabetical files (these are listed with their individual contents and page counts following the Master Points List which begins after “How To Use This Database” below).

HOW TO USE THIS DATABASE

A conventional database is not an easy thing to use. It usually involves a fairly substantial learning curve; not this one.

This is, of course, nothing more than a large Microsoft Office WORD document. You can add to it simply by “pasting” your images and text into it anywhere you wish. No software to learn, no specialized language, no lengthy how-to courses to take. In the next minute or so – literally – you’ll learn everything you need to know to use it. I promise.

Most point categories have a “Thumbnail Gallery.” It provides thumbnail versions of all images in that section and is located near the beginning of each point type/form section. Take the “ABASOLO” section for example.

How do you find “Abasolo” without slowly scrolling down the pages until you get there? It’s easy.

1)     Use the left-hand button of your mouse and click on EDIT in the toolbar at the top of the page

2)     A list appears; choose “FIND” and click on it.

3)     A box appears called “FIND AND REPLACE;” just type “Abasolo” there (without the quote marks). When you do this, a button at the bottom of the box appears that reads FIND NEXT. Click on it.

4)     In this case, because you’re in the first section of the database which also houses the  Master Points List that lists ALL point names covered in the entire database, you’ll hit ABASOLO there; click on FIND NEXT again and this time you’ll be at the beginning of the Abasolo section. Click on the CANCEL button at the bottom of the FIND AND REPLACE box and begin to explore Abasolo.

5)     Initially you’ll see a representation of the Abasolo form, plus a location map followed by a brief text section on the Abasolo. This is followed by something called “Abasolo Point Thumbnail Gallery” with a number on the right. The number tells you how many images are in the section in total, then how many source images and thumbnails make up this figure. For every single thumbnail you see, there is a corresponding larger image.

6)     Scroll down into the thumbnail gallery. You’ll notice below each thumbnail is a short caption made up of “ ABA” and a number. This same caption appears below the main image that the thumbnail was made from. Continue down to ABA07 and I’ll show you why this is important.

7)     Now, how do you get from ABA07 (the thumbnail) to ABA07, the bigger image? Simple: you use that EDIT-FIND feature again. Click on EDIT, click on FIND and type ABA07 (or even just the lowercase “Aba07” since either works) into the box. Click on FIND NEXT – and you’re instantly at the larger image.

8)     How do you get back to the thumbnails? Click on EDIT, then FIND and ABA07 will still be there. Click on FIND NEXT and it will take you back to the thumbnail with the same caption.

You can use this simple sequence to find anything in the database.

So there you go: you now know how to use the database and all it took you was roughly two minutes. And the more you use it, the faster you’ll become. TIP: it takes far too long to scroll through any file line-by-line; use the vertical scroll-bar on the far right of your screen when you need to move quickly – such as through the Points Master List below.

TIP: Add Your Own Images to the Database

You can use this database like a personal scrapbook by adding your own point images and other information.

To do this you’ll need to:

a)     Transfer the contents of the DVD to a directory on your hard drive.

b)     Right-click on any file in the directory you’ve created & select “Properties” from the drop-down menu.

c)     Uncheck the “Read Only” box. You should then receive a prompt asking if you’d like this to apply to all files in the folder; take this choice. With the files’ attributes changed, you should be able to cut-and-paste your pictures and text without a problem.
