2nd Annual  Fort Whoop-Up Knap-In

Ft Whoop Up Black Powder Range

 

We will join the Black Powder Rendezvous which will draw 50 plus participants. Anyone with a black powder gun can participate in the shoots. They must have insurance or purchase it from the Black Powder Club for $5. It is located in the valley close to the confluence of the St Marys River and the Old Man River, near the original site of Ft Whoop Up. Free camping will be available to preregistered knappers and a $10 attendance fee will be charged for nonregistered knappers and visitors. Contact Barry Rogers 403 678 5041 or email barryrogers@shaw.ca to register and get a map and further accommodation and activities information. Period dress is preferred but not mandatory.

Master Knappers from Canada and the US will be available to instruct those who want to try or improve their knapping skills. To knap you must have your own safety glasses, gloves and tools. Knapping if it rains will on the porch. There will be gatherings around a camp fire at night.

If you are a knapper or a wannabe knapper and wish to attend, register as soon as possible before Aug 1/14 with Barry Rogers at barryrogers@shaw.ca or 403-678-5041. A $10 fee will be charged for non registered Knappers to camp. This will secure a camp site for you and your family. Each participant will be given a name tag to identify him or her as a Knapper

For the knappers and families and Black Powder participants a Pot Luck suppers will be held Saturday and leftovers served on Sunday. The main entree will be provided and side dishes are to be provided by participants. A kitchen is available with stoves and fridge. Tea, coffee and water will be available all day.

To pay for the Knap-in an auction of donated items will be held. Please bring something to donate: rock, arrowheads, tools, hobby crafts, antiques, fossils, etc. There will also be knapping contests, a “ten speed”, and a “goat”, archery, atlatl and Blackpowder shooting at the Range under range rules.

There is no entry fee for the Knappers and their families that have preregistered. Name tags will be given out when you arrive.

Camp with trailers or tents. No water or electricity is available only pit toilets. See photo of the area attached. There is room for everyone.

Alternate accommodations are available in Lethbridge

Full service camp ground (Bridgeview RV Resort, 403-381-2357) in the river valley off of Highway #3 is available a short drive away.

Hotels:All accommodation in south Lethbridge is a drive distance from the range. Comfort Inn, 3226 Fairway Plaza Rd,403 320 8274, Holiday Inn 2335 Mayor Magrath Dr. 403 380 5050, Ramada Inn 1303 Mayor Magrath Dr. 403 329 0555

Lethbridge has supermarkets, Costco, Wal-Mart etc. There is a trailer dump station and potable city water available at the Tourist Information Hut (403-320-1222) on the corner of Mayor Magrath Dr. (Hyw 5) and Scenic Drive So. A multitude of food facilities and motels are located on Hyw 4 (24th st) and 5 (Mayor Magrath Dr.) in south Lethbridge.

Lethbridge has supermarkets, Costco, Wal-Mart etc.  There is a trailer dump station and potable city water available at the Tourist Information Hut (403-320-1222) on the corner of Mayor Magrath Dr. and Scenic Drive So.  A multitude of food facilities are at the hilltop above Fort Whoop-Up, near the corner of 3rd Ave. So. and Scenic Drive, including a nice wine and liquor store.

Arriving – to get to the Knap-In: 

From the East on the Crowsnest Trail Highway (#3) - Entering Lethbridge from the East on the Crowsnest Trail Highway (#3), turn South onto Mayor Magrath Dr, go South through Lethbridge to TWP Rd 81(81A)

From the West go south on Mayor Magrath Dr throught Lethbridge, turn right TWP Rd. 81 (81A) about ¼ mile before the airport go about 1.5 miles west to a T intersection turn left on to Range Rd 215 go 1 mile and turn right on to TWP Rd 81 go another mile and turn right at the Black Powder Range sign and go north about a mile and go down into the valley the range is on the left. Find Barry Rogers in a Coon skin Hat and get your name tag and campsite.

From the South coming in on Highway #4 (from Coutts US/Canada Border Crossing): - Follow Highway #4 to the intersection of Mayor Magrath Drive turn right and go south on Mayor Magrath Dr out of Lethbridge, turn right TWP Rd. 81 (81A) about ¼ mile before the airport, go about 1.5 miles west to a T intersection turn left on to Range Rd 215 go 1 mile and turn right on to TWP Rd 81 go another mile and turn right at the Black Powder Range sign and go north about a mile and go down into the valley the range is on the left. Find Barry Rogers in a Coon skin Hat and get your name tag and campsite

Note – A passport is required to enter Canada and return to the U.S.  Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) indicate both citizenship and identity and are valid for entry into Canada by land or sea, though not valid for international air travel. As of January 2009, these licenses are only available in Washington and New York.
